BBQ Sauce {Whole30 | Paleo}

I have to share a secret with you that took me months to share with Mr. B. I don’t like BBQ ?.  When your hubby is a master at the grill and smoker and considers BBQ to be a mandatory food group, you can imagine the look he gave me.

My main problem with it is the sauce. I actually really like smoked meat, but my preference is toward a dry rub. Most conventional BBQ sauces I’ve had are just sugar laced tomato sauce.

I wanted to create a shrimp recipe that involved BBQ sauce (stay tuned…), but it was during a round of Whole30. So, I decided to create a sauce that was complaint and more my style.


  • 1/4 cup tomato paste
  • 2 TBSP Apple cider vinegar you can add more if you like a more tart sauce
  • 1/2 cup water (more or less to get desired consistency) use date water for a bit more sweetness
  • 2 dates, pitted and softened in boiling water for 1 minute
  • 1 tsp smoked paprika
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • 1/2 tsp chili powder
  • Salt to taste



Blend it all up until smooth.

Notes: This sauce can be sweetened by adding more dates. It has a bit of spice to it, adjust the chili powder to your taste.

So there ya’ go! Don’ leave me hanging…any other anti BBQ peeps out there? I’m definitely in the minority in Oklahoma! But give this one a try!
